Playground Redevelopment Project 2025

Community is Core to Us

Since 1975, the Inglewood Child Development Centre (ICDC) has been a beacon of quality childcare and early education in Calgary’s heart. Paired with the Alexandra Centre Society (ACS), we’ve nurtured countless families, fostering growth and connection. Our playground has always been the beating heart of this mission—a vibrant hub where kids play, learn, and thrive.

Now, it’s time to transform this aging space into a modern and inclusive playground that reflects our commitment to the community. For over 45 years, our playground has been central to Inglewood’s identity. It’s where kids build social skills, where parents connect, and where neighbors gather for events and celebrations. With your support, we’ll elevate this vital space, making it a beacon of inclusivity and community spirit for years to come.

Let's Build a New Playground!

We need to replace the existing playground as it has reached the end of its life! Currently we have children outside twice a day for 2 to 2.5 hours (morning and afternoon), Monday through Friday. The playground is open to the public and has served the neighborhood for over four decades. Other organizations in the community that utilize the playground for their programs when it is not being used by ICDC include Wymbin Yoga, YMCA Kids, as well as the general public. Our centre maintains partnerships with the Alexandra Centre Society, Kin-Dir, ASaP GRIT, ARCQE, Mount Royal University, Bow Valley College, and the U of C.

Project Status

We’re thrilled to share that the ICDC/ACS Playground Project is moving forward with a stunning design in place. We’ve teamed up with a top-tier EPC firm BDI Play Designs to create an inclusive, nature-inspired playground featuring accessible elements and sustainable materials. This vibrant space is set to redefine play for our Inglewood community, and the final design is complete—ready to break ground!

We’ve secured initial funding, with a portion earmarked to launch construction. To fully realize this vision, we’ve applied for a substantial grant to cover the remaining costs. Your generous support could be the catalyst that brings this project to life, creating a lasting impact for families and children. Together, we can turn this dream into a reality!

About the Project

The existing playground has reached its useful end of life. The new playground will maintain the services that are currently provided by the daycare as a licensed outdoor play space. It will also create a new space for the larger community of children to use, as the next closest playgrounds (Enmax Park and Nellie Breen Park) are each approximately a 15-minute walk from ICDC.

Our new playground is needed because:

● The new play structure will give families with young children a safer option for play and recreation. The play structure at Nellie Breen is focused on ages 5 – 12, whereas ICDC focuses on children under 6. ICDC is also required to enclose the play structure with a fence for our licensing agreement as a daycare, meaning families with toddlers and infants can feel more secure when using the facilities.

● The playground serves more than just Inglewood. It is accessible to East Village residents, whereas the Enmax Park (which primarily serves Ramsay) requires crossing a busy 9th Avenue and taking an underpass along the river. Additionally, the playground will promote inclusion in play for all children as it will be accessible to those with disabilities. Benefits to the users of our new accessible playground:

● All families will feel welcome. Redevelopment will open the space up to be used by more members of the community. With its inner-city location and proximity to the Elbow and Bow River paths, we hope it will become a gathering place for Inglewood, Ramsey, East Village, and the greater Calgary community.

● Accessible equipment for daycare age children will promote early social inclusion. This will lay the foundation for a compassionate community. It sets a visible standard that we can use to teach about inclusion.

● The equipment will help develop gross motor skills. Inclusive spaces provide options for active play for everyone, including those with accessibility requirements, which in turn can increase self-confidence.

The playground will create economic benefits in the direct community. ICDC is located on 9th Avenue SE, a corridor in Inglewood that hosts restaurants, shopping, entertainment, and many services. By enhancing the hub offered by the Alexandra Centre with our new playground, we will draw more people, and notably families, to the area.

Our selected contractor, BDI Play Designs Inc. (BDI), has a strong reputation and has built several successful playgrounds over the years. It is an Alberta based developer and is located in the County of Lethbridge, which has the added benefit of keeping our dollars in the province, a requirement for many grant programs.
